Lotnisko Szprotawa – history
Forest complexes stretching from Lubin, Polkowice and Głogów towards the west to this day hide a huge number of military facilities. There are military garrisons, warehouses, bunkers, airports, training grounds, former POW camps and others. Most of these facilities were built at the time when these areas belonged to the Prussian-German side. After the Second World War, most of the military facilities were occupied and expanded by the Russian army, which adapted them to the requirements of the then battlefield. The airports were expanded, and dummy airports appeared on the training grounds, which were used for exercises with live ammunition, bombs and guided missiles.
In the years 1945 – 1993, Szprotawa airport was used by the CCCP troops. Currently, it is no longer exploited, and its area was taken over by the city of Szprotawa.
