When, after the death of Pope John Paul, the Conclave on October 16, 1978, chose Cardinal Karol Wojtyła from "a distant country" to succeed him, the communists fell in fear not only in Warsaw, but also in Moscow. They tried to kill the new Pope John Paul II, and if they failed, they would discredit him.

An element of the pontificate of St. John Paul II were apostolic journeys that were developed on an unprecedented scale. Although it must be admitted that the first Pope to board the plane to make an apostolic visit was Pope Paul 6.

St. John Paul II made 104 apostolic journeys, visiting all continents. St. John Paul II was the first pope to visit the White House and the Sejm of the Republic of Poland. St. As Pope, John Paul II most times visited Poland (9 times), the USA (7 times), France (7 times) and met young people at World Youth Day (9 times).

Apostolic journeys to Poland: the first pilgrimage (June 2–10, 1979), the second pilgrimage (June 16–23, 1983), the third pilgrimage (June 8–14, 1987), the fourth pilgrimage (June 1–9, August 13–16, 1991), The fifth pilgrimage (May 22, 1995), the sixth pilgrimage (May 31 – June 10, 1997), the seventh pilgrimage (June 5-17, 1999), the eighth pilgrimage (August 16–19, 2002).
