Bydgoszcz is a very important city on the historical aviation map of Poland. During the Second Polish Republic, it was the main training center for pilots and mechanics. In the times of the Polish People's Republic, Sukhoi Su-7 attack aircraft capable of attacking with nuclear (atomic) weapons were based here. After the socio-economic transformations, the 2nd Air Base was located here, and now aviation plants are located here and commercial aviation is developing.

After the Su-7 strike aircraft were withdrawn from service, the aviation regiment was disbanded. The Polish Army decided to create the 2nd Air Base here, which was formed on May 2, 1992, on the basis of the order of the Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Army of January 3, 1992, as JW. The 3033rd Unit was formed on the basis of the cadre of the disbanded 3rd Pomeranian Air Training and Combat Regiment and the Administration and Economic Department of the 2nd Air Defense Corps.

After the creation of the 2nd Air Base, it was subordinated to the commander of the 2nd Air Defense Corps until it was disbanded in 2007. Then the Base was subordinated to the 3rd Transport Aviation Brigade in Powidz, which was then transformed in 2008 into the 3rd Transport Aviation Wing.

On June 18, 1994, by decision No. 52 / MON, the holiday of the 2nd Air Base was set for May 2. The distinctive name "Bydgoszcz" was also given. The commemorative badge of the 2nd Air Base was approved by Decision No. 34/MON of February 14, 2003.

The 2nd Air Base consisted of: Staff, 2nd Transport Aviation Squadron (JW. 3290), Supply Company, Representative and Security Company, Communications and Flight Insurance Company, Communications Center, Driver Training Center for the Air Force, Military Fire Brigade, Military Workshops Remontowe, which were transformed into Wojskowe Zakłady Lotnicze No. 2 S.A.).

The basic tasks of the 2nd Base are repairs of flying equipment and training of military drivers for all military wheeled vehicles. Based on the decision of the Ministry of National Defence, the 2nd Air Base was disbanded on June 30, 2010.

Base commanders: Lt. Col. Dipl. navigation Jan Madejski (May 2, 1992 - May 1995), Col. Józef Lach (May 1995 - April 2003), Col. Dipl. Zdzisław Ostasz (April 2003 - December 2006), acting as Lt. Col. MSc. Eng. Marek Gryza (December 2006 - March 15, 2007), Col. Krzysztof Piekarski (March 15, 2007 - April 30, 2010).
