The idea of building an airport on the premises of a hard coal mine was born in 2006, and then plans were made. Already then, it was decided to build a hardened RWY. The airport was built on the site of the former "Silesia" hard coal mine heaps. In November 2007, RWY was completed. In 2008, hangars, an air traffic control tower and other facilities were built. On September 11, 2008, the airport in Kaniów was officially opened. Since 2014, the airport is listed in the airport register of the Civil Aviation Office under item 57 (registration number 65).

Initially (2008) RWY was hardened (asphalt concrete pavement), 700 m x 24 m in size. In 2018, RWY was enlarged to 1,000 m x 30 m. The RWY direction is 132/312 degrees. From December 16, 2019, the airport is used by the Polish Medical Air Rescue, for which helipads and technical and social facilities have been built. The Polish Medical Air Rescue to Kaniów was moved to the airports in Gliwice, but the target base of the Polish Medical Air Rescue is to be at the Katowice-Muchowiec airport.
