ED250 Pendolino Electric Multiple Unit. 2023 year.

EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) Alstom EMU250 is marked in Poland as the ED250 series, and is popularly called "Pendolino", Italian for "Pendulum". The train consists of seven carriages and is adapted to the normal track gauge. The train is a high-speed vehicle from the Pendolino family. It is manufactured by Alstom in the Italian factory Savigliano, in the north of Italy. It bears the factory designation Alstom ETR 610. Initially, they were produced by Fiat Ferroviaria, and then by Alstom, which took over Fiat Ferroviaria.

Pendolino in Italian "Pendulum", is a high-speed train from 200 km/h to 250 km/h. Some EMUs in the world received a tilting body. By tilting the body, the train is able to negotiate curves that are designed for slower trains at higher speeds. Several hundred EMU units have been built and operated by several carriers in Europe and Asia.

Interestingly, since 1974, Pendolinos have been designed for different power supplies; 3 kV DC, 25 kV AC, 15 kV AC. Trains can consist of 3 to 11 cars. Various wheelbases can be used on the trolleys. Everything depended on the client. Each car has two two-axle bogies and Jacobs bogies were not used. The electric motors are located under the frame of the box, not in the bogies themselves, and drive the wheels through the cardan shaft.

The fourth generation of Pendolino trains was launched in 2008. The new EMU is marked ETR 610. The train can reach a speed of 250 km/h, with a design speed of 275 km/h. The train can operate at 1.5 kV DC, 3 kV DC, 15 kV AC and 25 kV AC. The set can be equipped with 3 kV DC, 15 kV AC and 25 kV AC power supplies at the same time. The train has two sets of pantographs. The ETR 600 version has been deprived of operation under the voltage of 15 kV AC.

On the basis of the ETR 600 and ETR 610, many export versions of the New Pendolino were created. Some trainsets have been deprived of the tilting mechanism of the box. The tilting mechanism of the ground is limited and amounts to; 7.5 degrees, 8 degrees or 10 degrees. A wide-gauge version was created for Finland.

In 2013, 20 7-car trains were delivered for PKP InterCity, without the tilting mechanism of the body. The operating speed of 250 km/h and the design speed of 275 km/h were maintained. During tests in Poland, the highest speed in the history of Pendolino trains operation in the world was achieved with the result of 293 km/h.

Italy, Ferrovie dello Stato.

In 2006, Trenitalia ordered 12 fourth-generation ETR 600 trainsets for Frecciaargento services. Subsequently, Frecciaargento was transformed into Pendolino new Frecciarossa. The warehouses were created in Savigliano, Italy. The presentation of the first trainset took place in 2006, and since 2008 the trainsets have been in operation. A total of 93 ETR 600 EMU trains were built.

EMU ETR 600 has 7 cars; 4 power cars and 3 rolling cars. There are 430 seats in the carriages and two spaces for wheelchair users. The length of the train is 187.40 m (614 ft 10 in). The wagons have a length of 26.20 m and 28.20 m. The width is 2.83 m. Curb weight is 387,000 kg. Gross weight 421,000 kg. Axle load 16,500 - 18,200 kg. Power of electric motors 5,500 kW (7,376 hp). Electrical systems 3 kV DC - 25 kV 50 Hz AC (ETR 600) and 3 kV DC - 25 kV 50 Hz AC - 15 kV 16⅔ Hz AC (ETR 610). Track gauge 1.435 m (4 ft 8 + 1⁄2 in).
